EditPlus is a text editor for Windows that supports syntax highlighting and other advanced features.

EditPlus is much more than a text editor. It is an editor for programmers whether you design webpages or develop applications in C++. It is also Internet-capable. The program features out-of-the-box support for FTP, FTPS and SFTP—for uploading and downloading files—and it has a web rendering window so that you can visualize the changes you have made to your HTML and other Internet-centric files.

The syntax highlighting is quite sophisticated. It includes ASP, C/C++, HTML, Java, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and VBScript. You can also add your own custom syntax files. Develop a syntax highlighting rules file from scratch or use on of the provided files as an option. The community has shared dozens perhaps hundreds of custom files for many different programming or markup languages. If you want something that is not there by default, chances are someone has already made it for you.

Upon launch, the menu and tool bar arrangement is a bit of a nightmare. Fortunately, the program is also highly customizable visually as well as other the hood. If you prefer a more streamlined menu that emphasizes what you use, you can do that. It will take a bit of time to sort it all out, but if you code often, that investment will be worth it in productivity down the line.

EditPlus offers numerous tools as well. In addition to the aforementioned HTML viewer, these include a hex viewer, an HMTL toolbar, line numbers, code collapsing, rulers, URL highlighting, spell checker, sophisticated search and replace and so on and so forth. You can also add your own tools, and these can be used as independent programs that you activate from within EditPlus—such as compilers—or they can serve as plugins that transform how you use EditPlus.

Some issues with EditPlus were encountered during this review. This download is a trial, which means that you can install it and use it for a period, but then, you will have to purchase a full license in order to continue using it. The license price may be a bit on the high side relative to the free and other paid options that are out there. In addition, the user interface has not been updated to Windows 10 standards, and that is something that should be expected from modern software for which you pay.
